Chesterfield considers ending year-round school calendar at Bellwood Elementary

Chesterfield County School Board considers ending year-round calendar at Bellwood Elementary after mixed results and parent scheduling concerns. CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Chesterfield County School Board is reconsidering its decision to keep Bellwood Elementary on a year-round calendar, potentially ending the district's experiment with alternative scheduling that began in 2018.School board staff say returning to a traditional calendar would bring several benefits, including aligning testing schedules, freeing up teachers for professional development days, and improving attendance by eliminating scheduling conflicts for families with children in traditional calendar schools. However, school staff said studies have shown test results at the two schools haven't differed significantly from nearby traditional schools. Most parents at Bellwood Elementary support the change to a traditional calendar, citing scheduling conflicts with families who have children in traditional calendar schools.

Florida gets closer to being a 'free state' with plan to end school vaccine mandate

Surgeon General Joseph A. Ladapo proposed ending the requirement that public school children be vaccinated, calling the mandate "slavery." This was evidenced yesterday when Florida Surgeon General Joseph A. Ladapo said at a press conference with Gov. Ron DeSantis that he would work to end all vaccine mandates in the state, including the default requirement that children be vaccinated in order to attend public schools. What will be the practical effects of Florida's ending of vaccine mandates? Certainly, the presumption is that if you make something easier to do, more people will do it. Should Florida schools make vaccination voluntary and make it paperwork-free to decline them, you can assume that on the margins, fewer parents will get their children vaccinated.Nevertheless, you go to war with the army you have. Should the two succeed in ending vaccine requirements for public school children, the Sunshine State would actually be a little closer to earning the title of the "free state of Florida."Ladapo said he would use what rule-making power he had as surgeon general to eliminate vaccine mandates. He said he'd also work with lawmakers to amend the state law that currently requires school children to be vaccinated.

Trump issues orders to promote school choice, end "anti-American" teaching | Reuters

President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed executive orders to promote parental choice in school selection and end federal funding for curricula that he called the "indoctrination" of students in "anti-American" ideologies on race and gender. Jan 29 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed executive orders to promote parental choice in school selection and end federal funding for curricula that he called the "indoctrination" of students in "anti-American" ideologies on race and gender.Trump and his allies throughout the campaign have accused public schools of teaching white children to be ashamed of themselves and their ancestors due to the country's history of slavery and discrimination against people of color.A once-obscure academic concept, the theory has become a fixture in the fierce U.S. debate over how to teach children about the country's history and structural racism. An academic framework most often taught in law schools but not in primary and secondary schools, it rests on the premise that racial bias - intentional or not - is baked into U.S.The first order also directs the U.S. Department of Education to prioritize federal funding for school choice programs, a longstanding goal for conservatives who say public schools are failing to meet academic standards while pushing liberal ideas.

25 Fun Ways to Celebrate the End of the School Year - Everyday Reading

I love the end of the school year so much and I love kicking it off in a fun way!! Here are some really great ways to celebrate the end of the school year. I really like to celebrate the end of the school year in a fun way – even if the summer itself is pretty low-key (which ours usually are!), it feels nice to start with a fun acknowledgment of the completion of another school year and the beginning of a new season. For years, we’d go get soft-serve cones on the last day of school. For about four years, we had an end of school year celebration where my sister and I both took our kids to Las Vegas and spent the weekend at my parents’ house and let the cousins swim and play together all weekend long while my sister and I sat by the pool and talk for hours.Get a special treat after the last day of school. This was one of the most common responses for end of school year celebration ideas – lots of families go to Sonic for slushes or 7-Eleven for Slurpees or get frozen yogurt with unlimited toppings or go to a local snow cone stand or visit a donut shop. This is a fun and super simple end of year tradition! And then you’re off the hook for making breakfast on the first morning of summer! Prep a summer basket with new swimsuit, goggles, floats for pool, books, summer workbooks, etc. This is a delightful way to make sure your kids have all the supplies they need for the upcoming summer (it’d be fun to set these out at breakfast on the last day of school!).

Florida leaders hope to end school vaccine mandates

A big announcement today from the state's top medical doctor could affect thousands of Florida children and their parents.. Under the plan, Florida would become the first state in the U.S. to do away with vaccine requirements for kids to attend schools. "We are sending a clear message. It's the parents, not government, that have the final say when it comes to their kids' health and well-being," said Florida Lt. Governor Jay Collins at a news conference Wednesday near Tampa. Florida leaders want to end all school vaccine mandates. In any case, it looks like state leaders are determined to lift this vaccine requirement for school kids. "We need to end it. It's the right thing to do! It'll be wonderful for Florida. We would be the first state to do it," Dr.FILE - Florida officials are planning to end all school vaccine mandates here in the Sunshine State. The Governor says he supports Dr. Ladapo in this effort to end vaccine mandates for school kids.

The End of School: Technology is Liberating Education from the Classroom | by Zak Slayback | Mission.org | Medium

Technology is Liberating Education from the Classroom, and that’s a great thing. This eventually morphed into the public school of today. With the influence of Prussian industrialization of school and the shift from local schooling to schooling and then federal schooling in the United States, we ended up with the schools of today.Students learn according to a schedule that is largely determined by the year in which they were born. At a certain age, they get to differentiate based on abilities and on interests but are still primarily passive agents of schooling. The end of school changes all that more than anything else. This is summary of the introduction and conclusion to my forthcoming book, The End of School: Reclaiming Education from the Classroom. You can pre-order it on Kindle here or sign up for an email when print is available here. That’s a pretty cool place to be. The end of school is just beginning — it’s something we should welcome, not something we should fear.
